NFPA 70E requires a documented arc flash risk assessment. Without one, you have no solid record to show during an inspection or after an incident.
If an arc flash incident happens and you have no documented risk assessment, your records may not support the claim. A finished study on file shows you took the hazard seriously.

An arc flash study is a technical analysis that calculates the incident energy at each piece of electrical equipment and determines the arc flash boundary and the PPE required to work on it safely. BASS MCS performs the study to IEEE 1584 methodology and labels your equipment per NFPA 70E.
OSHA doesn’t name an arc flash study directly, but OSHA uses NFPA 70E as the recognized safety standard, which requires a documented arc flash risk assessment before workers are exposed to energized equipment. Without one you have no defensible record during an inspection or after an incident.
NFPA 70E requires that an arc flash risk assessment be reviewed at least every five years, or sooner whenever the electrical system changes. Adding equipment, changing the utility feed, or replacing protective devices all trigger an update.
IEEE 1584 is the industry standard method for calculating arc flash incident energy. It’s the calculation model behind a defensible, accurate arc flash study and the warning labels applied to your equipment.
You receive incident energy calculations for each piece of equipment, arc flash boundary determinations, PPE category assignments, printed and installed equipment labels, an updated one-line diagram, a short-circuit and coordination study, and a written report.
